Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is a chemical compound. In its pure form, it is a pale blue liquid, slightly more viscous than water. It is used as an oxidizing agent, bleaching agent, and disinfectant. Concentrated hydrogen peroxide, or “high-test peroxide,” is a reactive oxygen species and is used as a propellant in rocketry. Its decomposition produces OH radicals, which are available for only a few seconds and, during this time, oxidize organic and inorganic materials with strong oxidizing properties.
Edible hydrogen peroxide is a mild disinfectant used to prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns on the skin. It may also be used as a mouth rinse to help remove mucus or relieve minor oral irritation (e.g., due to canker sores or gingivitis).
