Potassium hydroxide, also known as caustic potash or potash, is an inorganic compound with the formula KOH. It is one of the strongest bases and has numerous industrial applications. Potassium hydroxide is a strong, corrosive base capable of penetrating the skin and body tissues.

Contact with this chemical can cause burns, severe irritation, and even blindness if it reaches the eyes. Inhalation of this caustic base can damage the mucous membranes and lungs. If ingested, it is highly toxic and may lead to permanent tissue damage or even death.

The most important application of potassium hydroxide is the neutralization of acids. It is used in the production of liquid soap, drain cleaners, paints, and resins. It is also used in the washing of fruits in factories, and combining it with fats produces soap. Although soap is also commonly produced using sodium hydroxide, potassium-based soaps are softer and more soluble in water.
