EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is a highly versatile compound used in various industries, primarily as a chelating agent. EDTA is available in disodium and tetrasodium forms. This compound is used to reduce calcium levels in the blood and to manage cardiac arrhythmias caused by cardiac drugs known as digitalis (digoxin, lanoxin).

In the textile industry, EDTA prevents impurities from affecting dyed products. In the pulp and paper industry, it inhibits the ability of metal ions, particularly Mn²⁺, to catalyze disproportionate reactions of hydrogen peroxide, which is used in chlorine-free bleaching. Similarly, EDTA is added to certain foods as a preservative or stabilizer to prevent oxidative degradation catalyzed by metal ions.
